“Its not about the weather.” he said and swallowed, attempting to relieve his dry mouth. “Its about the timing. its all in the stars you know. If you dont get it right on time….” he laughed and shook his head. “the stars know what they want from you and how to get it… and if you give them what they ask, you will get great things in return…” He nodded and pulled a small set of cards from one of the many pouches around his waist. “here. Just keep this with you… they will show you what to do next.”

“Whats your name kid?”

“Thirteen.” the boy said softly. his words wore a thin accent, untraceable to most. He sat quietly with his knees to his chest.

“Why do you wear that veil? I’m sure you have pretty eyes…” the man smiled warmly, trying to coax the boy to come out of his shell a little.

“I used to.” he replied softly.

“used to? what do you mean used to?”  He didnt seem to understand and furrowed his thick brows.

Thirteen’s hands trembled as he pulled the flowery lace veil from his eyes and tilted his head to the floor. “Its been so long..” He could not blink, he could not see… thick bleeding wounds lined his hollow eye sockets. they were crusted with years of infection and never healing sepsis.

The man said nothing. he only stared, his mouth agape.

“I’m sorry. I have to go…” Thirteen stood. he wasnt very tall, maybe 5 foot and a half, if he stood up straight. He wore layers of ratted velvet and lace around his hips and a veil to cover his eyes. He almost passed for normal if he kept his veil down… almost… “I never should have come here.. I’m so sorry.”

A timid smile broke the boy’s lips and he hid his face behind dirty hands. “Really?” He whispered, parting his fingers just enough to peek out at the man who had offered him more than he could ever have imagined. “You… you  mean you wont take it back?” The man only smiled and nodded.  He scrambled from his place on the floor and tackled the man in an adoring embrace. Eleven couldn’t imagine having a whole room for himself…. A room he could call his own. His smile faded quickly though and he slumped down against the cold tile floor. “I think you’re lying to me. I think you want to starve me out… I think you don’t actually like me.” his lips curled in a childish frown and he narrowed his eyes. “I…I don’t think so.” he scuttled backwards and brought his knees tight up to his chest. “I cant let you do that…you… you know I cant.” his voice grew smaller as his rested his face on his scabbed and bleeding knees. “I wont let you… not again…”
