on adonais and two loves

i wrote this for a school project, it is a reflection on two poems. excuse any mistakes.

———

He wept for his love and oh, he did so with grace; for his love was dead and he knew not how to resurrect the warm feelings that were once so fondly shared. He was twisted, his body trembling as his own mortality flashed betwixt his thoughts. There was no end to death, he thought, no end to the decay of goodness and beauty. There seemed no point in any of it. His lover was gone and he would never return from the sulfurous bowels of the nightmare he had been condemned to. But what of himself? Would only in death, he find himself able to rekindle the fire of their passion?
Would it take years of ennui and estranged nights for him to forget the man he so loved? “to hell with me!” he cried out, his voice choked with sorrow. “To hell with me… so that i may be with him.” and just as a Great aria responds to its gallery, the world responded to his cries with a glimmer of light. suddenly he saw it, running water, teeming with life and hope and he rejoiced! The world had not ended, all of time moved on, unknowing as it ever was that the spark of life he once saw had been snuffed out. And if it could move on, apathetic, than so should he; with all his memories and love kept wrapped close to his heart. Only then, when despair ran tepid could he move from his place ‘neath the willows and when he felt the icy dew against his feet, he was happier for it. The rain still fell and the sun still shone like shining chrysolite for all the world to see. He was better for having loved, for having known such a pure and perfect joy. In such detail could he recall the many moons ‘neath which they often shared the wan light and spoke, archaic, of their forbidden love. Oh! The things they once spoke of! Such romance and fascination that dominated their dreams then, uniting them as one. And he remembered, fondly, such enraptured times that would, even as they had passed, bring a moment of peace to his weary mind when it faced even the most damning of ailments.  As he gazed upon the celestial masterpiece that had been created so many years before him, he smiled. Oh how happy they had been once! The beauty he saw then still remained, just as glistening and bright as it had been. He knew then, his heart would always long for his ill-fated lover and that what once was would never be again. But could he continue with his life as it were? Would the beautiful Youth he had loved be so easily replaced? Knowing he could never find another love so inspiring, he consigned, with tears in his eyes, to never love again. to mar what was would have been a fate far worse than to lose ones lover. With bedizened dreams and eyes that told of his past, he cried out, for all the world to know, “I have loved! and have been loved in return!”
