Carbon

Could I reignite the flame
that once burned brightly between us
I would not.

I would never again
wish life
into those darkened ashes

I do not pray any longer
to see them stir up
consuming all I now have
with their hunger
to catch fire
one more time before it all ends

I do not long to feel your fingertips
laced with the fire in your heart
tangle into mine
because you see
I do not care
for the blisters you leave behind.

I would not
if given the chance
douse all you were in gasoline
all we had in kerosene
and drop a match
into the middle of it all
with the hope that
we would burn as brightly
as we once did.

I would not give you
any moment
any chance at all
to spark back to life in my eyes.
I do not care
for the scars you leave behind.

It would be naïve to think
that I could reanimate the corpse
of all we once held
above the world
Naïve to think
that it would ever be the same

I burned those bridges
with not a single glance backwards
and at once felt
the fires that ravaged
my heart and soul
lose their heat
and quell the pain you left with me

So no
I would not
could not
and never would
if given the chance
even the fleeting moment
reignite the flame that once
burned so brightly
between us

Because you see
I don’t care for the blisters
you left behind.
